Sophomore Elizabeth Begley won her first collegiate title at the Cougar Fall Draw this weekend in her native Houston. However, Texas’ top player junior Aeriel Ellis lost in the round of 16 in the ITA Intercollegiate Indoor Championship in New York, after qualifying to her eighth consecutive national championship.
Falling two rounds short of her performance in this tournament last year, Ellis lost a tough three-set battle to Miami’s Anna Bartenstein 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. The rollercoaster match ended Ellis’ chances of claiming a title at one of three national tournaments during the season.
Back in Texas, the Longhorns competed against their regional opponents, with freshman Alex Martin reaching the quarterfinals of the black singles draw and Begley fighting her way through fairly difficult matches to take the main draw singles title defeating Auburn’s Emily Flickinger. Begley and sophomore Juliana Gajic also reached the doubles semifinals this weekend.
