Craig Lutz earned All-American honors at the NCAA Championships on Monday as the Texas men’s cross-country team finished 11th place overall.

“We set some high goals at the beginning of the season for our program that we met today,” head coach Bubba Thornton said. “It’s a good start to the year and [assistant] coach [John] Hayes has done a great job with this group of young men.”

Lutz had a time of 33:02.0, which was good for 33rd. The top 40 finish earned him All-American status, and he became the 20th cross-country All-American in Texas’ history. Lutz was one of only two freshmen to become an All-American this season, and the top true freshman in the country, with redshirt freshman Lawi Lalang of Arizona taking first place in the meet.

“We did a lot of preparation coming in and coach told me about the race as much as he could, but when you get out there and start running it was definitely harder than I was expecting,” Lutz said. “I have never been in a race with that much pain, but walking away from it I am honored to be an All-American.”

Next for Texas was sophomore Ryan Dohner, who finished 51st overall with a time of 30:23.4. His time was 20 seconds faster than his time at regionals. Junior Rory Tunningley was third for the Longhorns, coming in at 104th with freshman Mark Pinales finishing shortly after him at in 117th place. Brock Simmons was the final scorer for Texas. The senior came finished 141st overall. Junior Patrick McGregor and sophomore Colin Smith came in 167th and 169th place, respectively.
