Texas drops final match, will take No. 4 seed into tournament

Texas traveled to Lubbock this weekend looking for its third conference win, but instead came back with their third conference loss.

No. 22 Texas Tech handed the No. 15 ranked Longhorns a 4-3 loss to wrap up conference play ahead of the conference tournament this weekend. With the loss, Texas will have the number four seed in the Big 12 tournament, setting up a rematch with Texas A&M.

Texas got out to an early lead after picking up the doubles point. Tech’s duo defeated UT junior Chris Camillone and sophomore David Holiner, 8-5. The Longhorns got wins from doubles partners Daniel Whitehead and Ben Chen, and from freshmen Soren Hess-Olesen and Jacoby Lewis.

In singles, Texas was taken to the limit by Tech, with three of the six singles matches going to third sets.

Texas sophomore Sudanwa Sitaram posted a 7-6 (1), 6-2 win over his opponent. Chen took a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory. In the decisive match, Tech’s Gonzalo Escobar avenged an earlier loss this year to Whitehead, claiming a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (6) victory to hand the Red Raiders the overall victory.

With the loss, Texas drops to 2-3 in conference play. The Longhorns will take on Texas A&M for the fourth time this season in the conference tournament on Friday at 9 a.m. in College Station.

Texas holds the lead in the series, with wins over the Aggies in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in February, and most recently, a 4-3 thriller in the Lone Star Showdown. The Aggies claimed the victory in the Texas Cup, also in February.
