Longhorns claim three medals in two days

After two full days of competition, three Longhorns have already acquired hardware in London.

Former Longhorns Ricky Berens and Brendan Hansen, along with senior Jimmy Feigen, all medaled in their respective swimming events.

Feigen and Berens both brought home silver for their participation in the men’s 4 x 100-meter freestyle relay. On Sunday morning, Feigen and Berens swam in the qualifying heat for the relay, with Ryan Lochte, Michael Phelps, Nathan Adrian and Cullen Jones swimming in the final.


The United States contingent was narrowly defeated by the French, who were out for revenge after losing to the Americans in Beijing in 2008. The United States was ahead throughout the race until anchor Lochte was overtook in the final 50 meters.

Sunday morning, Berens competed in the qualifying round for the men’s 200-meter freestyle event and finished eighth to secure a spot in the semifinal Sunday afternoon. Despite a faster pace, Berens finished ninth in the semifinal, one spot short of qualifying for Monday’s final. On Tuesday, Berens will compete in his final event, the men’s 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay.

Feigen is not scheduled to compete in any more events in London.

Hansen took bronze in the 100-meter breaststroke Sunday after narrowly qualifying for the finals on Saturday afternoon. He will also swim the breaststroke leg for the United States in the men’s 4 x 100-meter medley relay, which begins Aug. 3 with qualifying heats and finishes up Aug. 4.

Sunday afternoon, former Longhorn Kevin Durant led the men’s basketball team to an easy victory against France 98-71. Durant and the United States will face Tunisia Tuesday.

On Saturday, former volleyball star Destinee Hooker easily defeated her opponent from South Korea 3-1. Hooker took a another victory against Brazil 3-1 Monday evening in the second of five matches.
