The Longhorns traveled to Lexington, Ky. this past weekend to compete in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. No. 17 Texas began play Friday as it matched up against No. 40 South Carolina, both of whom were undefeated going into the tournament. The Longhorns lost the doubles portion of team play by a mere one match, but were able to recover in the singles matches, where they won the first four to secure the victory over the Gamecocks.
On Saturday, Texas played against No. 9 Kentucky, where its red-hot start to the season came to a halt. Kentucky won the doubles point after only two matches, and then went on to win three singles matches to secure a victory over the Longhorns and remain undefeated on the season.
“It was a tough college tennis match tonight,” head coach Michael Center said. “Once again we had several opportunities in doubles but came up a little short. We were fighting back in singles, down 2-0, got on the board and the lost two pretty tough matches at the end. We learned a lot about our team tonight and we have some things we have to work on before we face USC next week.”
The Longhorns travel to Los Angeles, Calif. next weekend to compete against No. 2 Southern California.
