AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas alcohol regulators are preparing for spring break by using undercover youths to check at least 600 retailers for possible illegal sales to minors.
The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission on Wednesday announced the sting operations as part of public safety efforts.
The legal drinking age in Texas is 21.
A minor under the supervision of TABC agents will attempt to purchase alcoholic beverages. The stings will target bars, restaurants, grocery stores and conveniences locations along major roadways statewide.
Retail employees who sell to the minor will be issued a criminal citation. The business will face an administrative charge.
Selling alcohol to a minor is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by fines up to $4,000 and up to a year in jail. The retailer's alcohol permit could be canceled.
