Volleyball continues its spring reign with 5-0 sweep of New Mexico State

Rachel Thompson

In 2012, she was named the NCAA Championship Most Outstanding Player. In 2013, she hasn’t let it go to her head.

Outside hitter Bailey Webster, a rising senior, lead the Longhorns in their victory over New Mexico State Saturday in Austin with 14 kills.

Webster and All-America outside hitter Haley Eckerman powered the first set, while rising sophomore libero/outside hitter Amy Neal continued to strut her skills on the court, adding four kills.

It was incoming freshman Chloe Collins who closed the second set on a kill after pulling further away from the Aggies toward the end of the set.

Texas overcame a 12-12 tie in the middle of set three to rally and close the set, 25-19. The Longhorns squashed any remaining Aggie hopes in the fourth set, punctuated by Neal, with a decisive 25-9 victory.

In the final set, the Aggies crept up close to the Longhorns’s lead but were unable to grab the advantage. Texas concluded the fifth at 15-11.

Spring play for the Longhorns will wrap up next weekend in Dallas at the Collegiate Showcase.
