Men's cross country

The Longhorns will make their way to Lawrence, Kansas, this weekend for the Big 12 Cross Country Championships.

The Texas men took third at the race last year, falling behind Oklahoma State, which has won six consecutive championships, and Iowa State. The women’s team finished in fourth place despite Marielle Hall’s first-place finish individually. Iowa State, which has won the last three Big 12 championships, West Virginia and Oklahoma State were the top-three women’s teams last year.

The No. 29 Longhorn men earned that ranking after finishing seventh among the stiff competition at their most recent race two weeks ago, the Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Indiana.

This weekend, the women’s rowing team will travel to Chattanooga, Tennessee, to compete in the Head of the Hooch, a two-day event that hosts over 6,000 rowers every year.

The Head of the Hooch is known as “The Last of the Great Fall Regattas” and will be just that for the Longhorns, as it is the final regatta scheduled for the fall season. It will also be a chance to see how the team stacks up against Division I competition, such as Oklahoma and Kansas.

Just like last week’s Head of the Colorado, the Head of the Hooch is a head race, meaning that all boats race against the clock rather than each other. The boats are then ranked in each event by their times. 

Last year, Texas finished third behind Oklahoma in the women’s championship 8+, one of six top-10 finishes at the regatta for the Longhorns.

This year, the Longhorns are sending a total of 14 entries to seven events, including the women’s championship 8+, the women’s championship pairs, the women’s championship 1x and the women’s championship 4+. Novice rowers will also have the chance to compete in events such as the women’s open 8+, the women’s open 2- and the women’s college & club novice 8+.
