Junior quarterback Tyrone Swoopes and redshirt freshman quarterback Jerrod Heard began the next chapter in their quarterback competition Friday at the Longhorn’s opening practice for the 2015 season.

“I gotta tell you, a good first day,” said head coach Charlie Strong.

All eyes were on the quarterback position, but there was no clear winner today.

“You just continue to watch them,” Strong said. “It won’t be as tough a decision as we think it will be.”

Strong also looked for wide receivers’ ability to make plays.

“I always say, ‘You look for a wide receiver. You like to see the guy make a catch and take a five yard hitch and turn it into about 60 for us,” Strong said.

Late into practice, Heard lobbed a deep pass to freshman wide receiver John Burt. The 6-foot-1 Burt, was matched up against 6-foot-2 freshman cornerback Davante Davis.

Burt — an all-state hurdler in high school — jumped into the air and for a second it appeared that he caught the ball over Davis.

But Davis took it out of Burt’s hands and intercepted the pass.

“I caught that, I caught that,” Davis shouted after his best play of the day.

There was a playmaker on that snap, just on the wrong side of the ball.

At times, Heard and Swoopes weren’t hitting their targets. Passes were either too low or too high. And receivers — from Daje to sophomore Dorian Leonard — were dropping balls.

“They’ll make those catches,” Strong said. We just gotta continue to make the throws and they’ll catch them.”

When asked if they would be back at practice tomorrow, Strong chuckled before his answer, confused at the question.

“There’s no days off,” Strong said chuckling.
