There was a lightning delay while Brad Paisley played at UFCU Disch-Falk Field  across Interstate 35.

Maybe that’s why a crowd of less than 100 sat at Mike A. Myers Stadium and watched the Longhorns (2-2-2) and Beavers (4-0-2) finish in a 1-1 tie.

The game started two hours late because of lightning in the area. As if the two-hour delay wasn’t enough, Texas and Oregon State remained locked after 90 minutes. Even an additional 20 minutes of overtime couldn’t determine a winner.

The 110-minute match was Texas’ second-straight home game that went the distance.

Texas scored in the 18th minute of the game, when senior midfielder Lindsey Meyer was fouled in the box on a corner kick.

Meyer scored on the ensuing penalty kick.

It looked like the Longhorns would go into halftime with the lead and the momentum. For the first 44:57 of the match, the Beavers only attempted two shots. Texas was doing its job, stopping a team that was undefeated through five games, scoring five goals.

But the last three seconds of the half changed the game.

“I’m really disappointed in how we closed out the first half,” head coach Angela Kelly said. “We unplugged, and it’s unacceptable to give up a goal in the last 5 seconds of the half.”

Kelly was visibly frustrated after the game.

Her disappointment stemmed from when Texas allowed a through ball into the box. Oregon State forward Helene Haavik found the ball and fired it past senior goalkeeper Abby Smith.

“We stepped when we shouldn’t have stepped,” Kelly said. “It’s just a mental error, but the ball never should have got there anyway. It should have been out of the half.”

Kelly wasn’t the only one disappointed. Smith huddled her team as soon as she got the ball from the net.

“She just said some words to get our mind right and get us refocused so we could come back blazing in the second half,” defender Brinkley Field said.

Kelly complemented Smith’s pep talk with encouragement in the locker room at halftime.

“She pumped us back up,” redshirt freshman forward Mikayla Flores said. “She was just intense.”

Both lectures aimed to ramp up the Texas energy.

Even though Texas shot the same amount of shots –  just six – in each half, it had chances to score in the second. At one point freshman forward Alexa Adams received a through ball in the box. She battled Beavers’ sophomore goalie Bella Geist, but her shot wide left.

Flores managed to dribble the ball into the box and fire a shot, but the ball hit the iron crossbar.

The Longhorns had their chances to win after their blunder but didn’t capitalize.

“We’ll get our chances again,” Flores said.
