Joe Hubener leads K-State to win over UTSA
Quarterback Joe Hubener went into Kansas State’s road game against UTSA with no prior experience at the position at any level. But the junior still managed to walk out a winner. Despite a rough first quarter, which saw the Roadrunners take a slim 3-0 lead, Hubener brought the Wildcats to life with a 1-yard touchdown run that capped off a nine-play, 88-yard drive to give them a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Hubener finished 12 of 23 for 243 yards passing and added 58 yards on 17 carries and the lone touchdown in the 30-3 victory.
Baylor receiver earns Tyler Rose weekly award
With the suspensions of coaches Kendal Briles and Tate Wallis, and redshirt junior Seth Russell struggling against Lamar, there was much to be worried about Saturday night in Waco. But the Bears pulled through for a 66-31 win, thanks in large part to junior receiver Corey Coleman. For his role in the win, Coleman was named this week’s Tyler Rose Award Player of the Week. Coleman hauled in six catches — including a school single-game record four touchdown receptions — for 182 yards. He leads the country with 180 receiving yards per game and five touchdown catches.
Weekly Awards
Coleman’s performance earned him more than just one award. Monday, he was announced as one of the Big 12’s Co-Offensive Players of the Week along with Texas Tech sophomore quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes played a part in six touchdowns for the Red Raiders in a 69-20 win over UTEP. He finished the game 18 of 33 for 361 yards and four touchdowns and added two more scores on the ground.
Oklahoma cornerback Zack Sanchez was tabbed as the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week for his role in the Sooners’ overtime win at No. 23 Tennessee. The junior had six tackles, including a tackle for a loss, and came away with the game-winning interception in the second overtime frame.
Texas senior Daje Johnson rounded out the weekly awards as the Special Teams Player of the Week. Johnson had an 85-yard punt return for a touchdown and set up another touchdown with a 31-yard return as well. Johnson finished with 154 total return yards in the win over Rice.
Rankings Update
Despite blowout wins over unranked foes at home, neither TCU nor Baylor could gain any traction in the latest AP Poll released Monday. The Horned Frogs remained at No. 3 while the Bears actually dropped a spot to No. 5 behind Michigan State, who beat No. 12 Oregon 31-28.
Oklahoma received the biggest jump in the conference, moving up three spots to No. 16 following a double-overtime win at Tennessee. Oklahoma State jumped into the rankings at No. 25.
