No. 2 Texas finished its run in the Wildcat Classic on Saturday, defeating unranked New Mexico State in four sets. The match with New Mexico State was the Longhorns’ third of the weekend, with Texas previously claiming victories over unranked Savannah State and No. 16 Arizona on Friday.
Despite their unranked status, the Aggies (9-5) gave Texas (10-1) all they could handle at the McKale Center in Tucson, Arizona. New Mexico State stayed within six points of the Longhorns in each of the four sets, winning the second set and dropping the first set and third set by only three and two points respectively.
Senior outside hitter Amy Neal led the way for Texas once again Saturday, registering 16 kills. Junior middle blocker Chiaka Ogbogu also shined for the Longhorns, as the 2015 Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year compiled a career-high 15 kills.
The victory for the Longhorns was their sixth-consecutive win, improving their season record to 10-1. Currently ranked second in the nation, the Longhorns hold their highest ranking in the AVCA Coaches Poll this season. Texas has now appeared in the Top 10 of the AVCA polls for all but four of the past 138 weeks and has been ranked in the AVCA top 25 for 143 straight weeks, holding that position for more than a decade.
With the nonconference portion of the schedule finished, the Longhorns now look to the start of Big 12 action, which comes Wednesday against TCU in Austin.
