Kickoff times for Oct. 3
The Big 12 will get a lot of national television exposure next Saturday as conference play begins its second week.
The league announced Monday the start times for all ten games Oct. 3, including an ABC double-header. Texas’ battle at TCU starts at 11 a.m. on the network and will be followed by Texas Tech vs. Baylor at 2:30 p.m. from AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
The Big 12 will also have a double-header on FOX Sports 1 with West Virginia at Oklahoma starting at 11 a.m. and Kansas State at Oklahoma State starting at 3 p.m.
Kingsbury Comments
Texas Tech picked up one of its biggest wins in recent memory with a 35-24 win at Arkansas Saturday. Following the game, Red Raiders head coach Kliff Kingsbury didn’t hold back with his comments about Arkansas head coach Brett Bielema.
“[Bielema] just got his ass kicked twice in a row and probably next week by [Texas] A&M as well,” Kingsbury said.
At heart with Kingsbury’s beef is a comment Bielema said to Texas high school coaches about running the spread offense and not Bielema’s preferred traditional offense.
“To walk in there and say those [things], it definitely rubbed me the wrong way,” Kingsbury said.
The loss was the second-straight defeat at home for Arkansas against an unranked opponent.
Mayfield, Boykin take Offensive Co-Player of the Week Award
After leading their respective teams to high-scoring wins, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield and TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin received this week’s Big 12 Offensive Co-Players of the Week on Monday.
Mayfield finished the Sooners’ 52-38 win over Tulsa with 572 yards of total offense, setting an Oklahoma single-game record. He threw for 487 yards with four touchdowns and ran for two more scores.
Boykin racked up 504 total yards, 454 of which were through the air, and accounted for six touchdowns in the 56-37 win over SMU.
Texas Tech defensive back Jah’Shawn Johnson was named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week after registering 16 tackles, including a tackle for loss, a forced fumble and a recovered fumble in the team’s upset win over Arkansas.
Kansas State kicker Jack Cantele rounded out this week’s awards with the Special Teams Player of the Week. Cantele went 4-for-4 on field goals, including a 44-yard kick to send the game into a third overtime against Louisiana Tech.
TCU, Baylor remain in place in AP Poll
A win over Dallas-Fort Worth rival SMU wasn’t enough to push TCU into the second spot in the Associated Press rankings this week. The Horned Frogs, who beat the Mustangs 56–37 on Saturday, remained at No. 3 while Michigan State vaulted into the No. 2 position vacated by Alabama.
Baylor remained No. 5 in the poll following a bye week, while Oklahoma moved up one spot to No. 15 after a home victory against Tulsa. Texas’ opponent Saturday, Oklahoma State, also moved up a spot to No. 24 after a blowout win over UTSA.
West Virginia, Kansas State and Texas Tech each received votes.
