Big 12 Notebook: Week 5

Big 12 head of officials clears OSU-Texas crew

Just days after Big 12 referees were at the center of Oklahoma State’s 30-27 loss over Texas, the conference’s head of officiating failed to blame the crew for many of the calls.

Monday evening, Walt Anderson told the Austin-American Statesman that there were a “couple” missed calls, but that the crew, headed by Alan Eck, got a majority of the calls correct.

One of the biggest moments of contention in the game came when Texas head coach Charlie Strong was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after arguing a defensive holding call. Anderson said Strong was flagged for saying something rather than bumping the official.

Anderson said he couldn’t give specifics because of Big 12 rules and wouldn’t say if Eck would work any remaining Texas games.

Boykin tabbed as FWAA Offensive Player of the Week

After leading the Horned Frogs to a last-second win on the road at Texas Tech, senior quarterback Trevone Boykin was named the FWAA Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday.

In the difficult win over the Red Raiders, Boykin threw for 485 yards with four touchdown passes. His final touchdown throw, however, will be the one to be remembered. The pass was initially tipped by senior receiver Josh Doctson only to be caught by a diving Aaron Green, giving the Horned Frogs the win.

Pair of Cowboys highlight Big 12 weekly honors

After coming back to beat Texas 30-27 on the road, a pair of Oklahoma State Cowboys landed on the Big 12 weekly awards this week. The conference announced Monday that junior defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah and junior kicker Ben Grogan were named the Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively.

Ogbah registered six tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks in the win, while Grogan kicked two field goals in the last 93 seconds to tie and win the game for the Cowboys.

TCU senior receiver Josh Doctson rounded out this week’s awards with the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week after helping the Horned Frogs to a last-second win at Texas Tech. Doctson hauled in 18 receptions for 267 yards — a school record — and three touchdowns.

Horned Frogs drop a spot in latest AP poll

A last-second touchdown grab by Aaron Green was enough for TCU to get a win, but it wasn’t enough for the Horned Frogs to keep their spot in the AP Poll.

TCU dropped one spot to fourth in the latest edition of the rankings released Sunday. The Horned Frogs were previously tied with Ole Miss, who moved into sole position of third.

Baylor remained in fifth following its blowout win over Rice, while Oklahoma stayed No. 15 during its bye week.

Oklahoma State jumped four spots to No. 20 after coming back to beat Texas, and West Virginia rounded out the Big 12 teams in the rankings, jumping from unranked to No. 23 after a rout of Maryland.
