The Longhorns were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament after a 2-1 loss to the Kansas Jayhawks.
Texas had a chance to clinch the second seed in the tournament last week after starting Big 12 play 4-1-1. Instead, Texas lost its final two conference matchups at home to Oklahoma and Baylor and got the No. 3 seed and a match with No. 6 Kansas Wednesday night. The Longhorns previously beat the Jayhawks, 2-1, on Oct 2. in Kansas.
The first time the two squads went head-to-head, Kansas jumped out to an early lead and the Longhorns came roaring back to score two goals for the comeback victory.
Similarly, Kansas took a 2-0 lead Wednesday before Texas started another comeback. With 14 minutes left, freshman midfielder Kayra Dollas booted her first career goal into the top right of the net to cut the Kansas lead to 2-1.
The Texas attack continued to apply pressure on the Jayhawk defense in the closing minutes of the game, but the Longhorns failed to covert on the opportunities. Shots from senior midfielder Lindsey Meyer and junior defender Isabelle Kerr in the 85th and 89th minutes were stopped as Kansas held on for the win.
The loss dropped Texas to 8-6-4 on the season while Kansas advances to the next round to play Baylor.
Texas now awaits the NCAA Selection Show on Monday at 3:30 p.m. to see if it will qualify for the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship. If the Longhorns don’t qualify, their season will be over.
