Texas lawyer and longtime University benefactor Joe Jamail passed away in Houston on Wednesday morning after complications from pneumonia, the Austin American-Statesman reported.
Jamail graduated from the UT School of Law in 1953 but continued to give back to the University. In 2008 he gave $15 million to the University for the law school, nursing school and School of Undergraduate Studies. The football field at Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium and the swim center are both named in his honor.
He was also a legend in the courtroom and known for not mincing words. In 1985, he won the largest court settlement in history when he represented Pennzoil against Texaco. He earned an estimated $345 million out of the $10.53 billion settlement.
Jamail was 90 years old. He leaves three children: Robert, Randall and Joseph Jamail III.
So sorry to hear about the passing of Joe Jamail. He is a true Longhorn Legend.
