The Longhorns looked down and out.

No. 5 Wake Forest had won three straight matches to take a 3-1 lead in the contest, and seemed poised to keep Texas’ road losing streak alive.

But then, junior George Goldhoff won his match in a third-set tiebreaker. So did sophomore Adrian Ortiz.

Then, with the match on the line, freshman Rodrigo Banzer scored a third-set win to give the No. 26 Longhorns the 4-3 win Saturday afternoon.

“It was an amazing effort to win this match,” head coach Michael Center said.  “Wake Forest is a legitimate national title-contending team.  It just takes a lot of resiliency and competitiveness to do that.  We hung around and hung around and got the job done in the end.  It was just a great team effort.”

The Longhorns’ comeback began almost right away. Ortiz and senior Michael Riechmann dropped their doubles match; however, Texas overcame that with two wins in the other doubles competitions to take an early 1-0 lead.

But Wake Forest would rally to start the singles contests. Riechmann and freshman Julian Zlobinsky fell in straight sets while freshman Harrison Scott fell in three, giving the Demon Deacons a 3-1 lead.

That’s when the tide turned to Texas’ favor. Center said he’s happy with how the team never gave up even after falling behind.

“It was just one of those days where we were fighting and competing, and in the end we looked up and saw, ‘Wow, we’ve got it,’” Center said.

Texas heads to Corpus Christi next weekend to compete in the H-E-B Tournament of Champions.
