  • It’s that time of year again when it seems like Austin is bursting at the seams. All the opportunities South By Southwest has to offer can be overwhelming, and when the craziness ensues, it’s easy to miss out on some unforgettable experiences. Avoid a bad case of FOMO by checking out these four off-beat events this week.
  •
  • The Silent Room by Simon Heijdens
  • When: Friday, March 11 at 12:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
  • Where: 5th Street & Trinity Street
  • Admission: Free, all ages
  • SXSW is a week full of things to do, see, eat, hear, and at times, it can lead to a sensory overload. Dutch London-based artist Simon Heijdens has created a 40-foot space where you can get away from all of it. The space-engineered room allows visitors to walk alone through an experience devoid of any visual or audible sensation. Rumor has it that no one has been able to stand more than 45 minutes in the nothingness.
  •
  • Milkshakes & Memes: Exploring the Social Object
  • When: Sunday, March 13 at 11:00 p.m.
  • Where: Where WeWork ATX, 600 Congress Ave.
  • Admission: Free, 21+
  • Whether it was Left Shark, Drake’s “Hotline Bling” dancing or Pizza Rat, there’s no denying the power of the meme in 2015. So, through the efforts of marketing and social media giants Buzzfeed, WeWork, SplashThat and Attention, a celebration of the power of the social object and meme culture will be happening by way of milkshakes and music. Specially curated SXSW-inspired milkshakes will be served alongside fun, late-night entertainment, so stop by for some unashamed, “Miley, what’s good?” fun.
  •
  • Powerpuff Girls premiere
  • When: Monday March 14 at 8:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
  • Where: Long Center Terrace, 701 W Riverside Dr.
  • Admission: Free, all ages
  • Need some ’90s nostalgia? A parade and screening celebrating the return of the Powerpuff Girls series is taking place at 8 p.m. Cartoon Network will host the premiere at the Long Center before the first broadcast return of the show later this spring. Food and other fun activities will be provided before the anticipated return of the ’90s hit show, along with surprises that will get you feeling like a kid again.
  •
  • 79 cent Tumblr Party
  • When: Wednesday March 16 at 9 p.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Where: Historic Scoot Inn, 1308 E 4th St.
  • Admission: Free, 18+
  • Returning to SXSW, Tumblr will be throwing another party, this time with a new focus. The 79 cent party, referring to gendered wage gap in the United States, will feature an all-female lineup, “feminist art installations” from Tumblr collaborators and an appearance from former Texas state senator Wendy Davis. Jhené Aiko, Tacocat, Little Simz and Empress Of are set to play at the feminist-themed party.
