Texas and Texas A&M might not compete regularly anymore, but the NCAA selection committee did their best to set up a potential showdown between the two in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

The Longhorns earned the No. 6 seed in the West Region while Texas A&M grabbed the No. 3 seed, the committee announced Sunday afternoon.

Texas, however, will first have to get past No. 11 Northern Iowa in the first round on Friday. The Panthers went 22-11 overall this season with a 11-7 Missouri Valley Conference. They also knocked off conference favorite Wichita State in overtime in the conference tournament.

Texas A&M will play No. 14 Green Bay, who won the Horizon League tournament to get into the tournament.

But the potential Longhorn-Aggie showdown will likely draw the most attention leading up to the start of the tournament. Texas leads, but Texas A&M won the only meeting between the two teams, taking an 84-73 victory on Nov. 25 in the Bahamas.

The Longhorns enter the tournament having lost five of their last nine games, including a blowout loss at home to Kansas and two big defeats against Baylor. They do, however, have four wins against the AP Top 10 teams.

The Aggies won their first regular season conference title since 1986 — back in the Southwestern Conference days — but came up just short against Kentucky in the SEC title game. This will be the first time since 2011 that Texas A&M will be in the tournament.

But the potential rivalries won’t stop in the second round if the Longhorns can advance. Texas could face the region’s No. 2 seed Oklahoma in the Sweet 16 and a possible rematch with No. 4 seed Baylor awaits in the Elite Eight.

Oregon is the No. 1 seed in the West Region.
