No. 9 Texas rowing had a successful showing on the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic, taking first place in four of the five races they competed in and advancing to the Grand Final in all five races.

In the Varsity 8 race, Texas came in second with a time of 6:41.140, falling to USC and narrowly beating UCLA by .3 seconds. The Longhorn’s runner-up finish will advance them to the Jessop-Whittier Grand Final tomorrow, where they will compete among the top four finishers from each heat.

Texas posted a time of 7:35.204 to claim first place in the second heat of the Varsity 4 race, easily beating runner-up UCLA by nine seconds. The Longhorns and the Bruins will advance to the Varsity 4 Grand Final tomorrow to go up against the top two teams from the two other heats.

With a time of 6:50.498, the Longhorns came in first in the second of three heats in the second Varsity 8. The first place finish will advance them, along with runner-up Gonzaga, to the 2V Grand Final tomorrow, where they will race the top two finishers from each heat.

Texas claimed first place in the Women’s Collegiate Novice Preliminary race, rowing 7:11.874 while beating second place Washington State by 14 seconds. As all boats would advance to the final and the race only determined lane position, the Longhorns will claim the first lane position in tomorrow’s race.

In their last race of the day, the Longhorns once again took first place in the first of two heats of the Women’s Open, beating runner-up Gonzaga by 9 seconds with a time of 7:13.782. Texas will compete among the top four finishers of each heat in the final tomorrow.

Texas’ first race tomorrow, the Varsity 8 Grand Final, will begin at noon.
