The Longhorn men took the track for the preliminary rounds in the first day of the NCAA National Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
The highlight of the day was junior Senoj-Jay Givans, who became the first Longhorn in history to run a sub-10 second 100-meter dash. Givans’ 9.96 second time is the ninth fastest 100-meter dash in NCAA history and the No. 2 all-time semifinal performance. He will continue in the men’s finals on Friday.
The men ran the 4×100 meter relay without their anchor in Aldrich Bailey. The junior suffered an injury during the men’s 4×400 last week, which prevented him from traveling to nationals. Freshman John Burt took his place, but the Longhorns missed the eighth qualifying spot for finals by 0.003 seconds, clocking in at 39.258 seconds.
Texas was one of few schools sending freshmen to nationals in individual events. Burt was one of only two freshman competing in the 100-meter hurdles. He finished seventh in his heat with a time of 14.32 seconds, missing finals. Alex Rogers was one of just three freshman in the 1500-meter, finishing 24th. Steffin McCarter represented the freshman in the field events by finishing 13th overall in long jump with a leap of 7.45 meters.
Redshirt freshman Barrett Poth and senior Reese Watson tied for 17th place in pole vault, clearing a height of 5.15 meters.
Senior Zack Bilderback took the track next to compete in his last 400-meter dash, clocking in at 46.82 seconds to take 21st overall.
