Ogbogu to miss season for academic reasons

Senior middle blocker Chiaka Ogbogu will not play this season for academic reasons, according to Texas athletics.

According to the Austin-American Statesman, Ogbogu is eligible but working through some “academic issues.”

“I’m extremely disappointed and take full responsibility for the situation I put myself and my team in,” Ogbogu said in a statement. “I plan to use this time to take care of my business academically, continue to get better as a player and come back next January and compete next year with the Longhorns again.”

The Longhorns will look to fill a big void left by the 6-foot-2 middle blocker. Ogbogu finished second on the team with a 40.2 kill percentage last season. She was selected as an AVCA first-team All-American in 2015, and was expected to take on an even bigger role with the departure of middle blocker Molly McCage.

Head coach Jerritt Elliott said he expects Ogbogu back on the court in 2017.

“We are disappointed that Chiaka won’t be playing with us this season, but she has our full support moving forward,” Elliott said. “We have no doubt that she will learn and grow from this experience and take care of the things she needs to, learn and grow as a person and will look forward to having her back in 2017.”

Texas opens its season against Oregon on Friday in the VERT Challenge in Eugene, Oregon.
