This weekend the No. 22 Longhorns participated in the Jim West Invitational in The Woodlands, Texas. The team finished Day 1 in second after shooting a 288 and then a 281, But the Longhorns ended the tournament in fourth after shooting a third round 288, ending the tournament 7-under par.
“Per the overall finish, I thought it was okay,” head coach Ryan Murphy said. “I don’t think anyone was necessarily satisfied with our play, but it was okay overall, with much room for improvement.”
The team was led by freshman Greta Volker and junior Sophia Schubert, who both finished tied for No. 11. Volker had a very good showing, shooting a 72-67-74 over the course of the two days. Schubert vaulted up 24 spots after shooting a historic 66 for her second round. The season-low score was the second time Schubert recorded a 66 during her career. Her first was last year at the Las Vegas Collegiate. Her cards for the first two rounds of the tournament were 78 and 69, respectively.
“I thought Sophia’s 69-66 finish in rounds two and three was just terrific,” Murphy said. “This capped a great comeback after a slow start in round one, so I am very proud of her resiliency and ability to fight her way back.”
Freshmen Emilee Hoffman shot a 71-73-74 over span of the tournament and finished tied for 28th-place. Freshman Dominique Galloway shot a 71-75-74 over the course of Sunday and Monday to finish the tournament tied for 34th.
Senior Julia Beck was a model of consistency, never shooting above 75 but never shooting below 70, either. She finished tied for 39th.
Florida State won the invitational at 24-under par, with Kent State coming in second seven strokes off the Seminoles’ pace. Miami fisnished third, leading the Longhorns by four shots.
The Longhorns begin play again on Monday, Oct. 17 and Tuesday, Oct. 18 as they will host the Betsy Rawls Invitational at the UT Golf Club in Austin, Texas.
“We can compete against the best teams in the country,” Murphy said. “But we will need to have much cleaner scorecards in order to do it.”
