No. 8 Texas (13-3) wanted another shot at No. 3 Wake Forest, but the Longhorns got more than they could handle Saturday in a 4-0 loss to the Demon Deacons.

The Longhorns seemed outmatched from the start as they dropped the first two doubles matches.

Wake Forest poured it on in singles play as freshman Borna Gojo defeated sophomore Harrison Scott, 6-0, 7-5. The loss snapped Scott’s 12-game win streak and gave the Demon Deacons a 2-0 lead. The gap increased when Christian Seraphim, Wake Forest redshirt junior, took down sophomore Leonardo Telles, 6-4, 6-2.

Freshman Christian Sigsgaard attempted to ignite a Texas comeback with an early lead in the first set against Petros Chrysochos, but Chrysochos came roaring back for a 6-4, 6-3 victory. The win secured Wake Forest’s 4-0 sweep over the Longhorns.

“Wake Forest has a heck of a team,” head coach Michael Center said. “They were better than us today. That’s the first time this season that a team just flat out beat us.”

Texas came out Sunday against No. 34 Rice with a level of intensity not seen the day before. Sigsgaard and sophomore Colin Markes gave the Longhorns an early 1-0 lead in doubles play, besting Rice sophomores Eric Rutledge and Jake Hansen, 6-4.

Sophomore Rodrigo Banzer extended the lead with a dominating 6-2, 6-2 win over Rutledge. Sigsgaard then took care of Rice junior Jamie Malik, winning 6-3, 6-3 to give Texas a 3-0 lead.

Minutes after Rice got on the board, sophomore Julian Zlobinsky put an end to any hope of a comeback with a 6-4, 7-6 win over sophomore Oscar Janglin.

“We try and have the same competitive mindset for each match,” Sigsgaard said. “We wanted to show (Rice) that we were ready to fight.”

The Longhorns punctuated the victory by winning the last two singles matches, giving them a final score of 6-1. Next up on the schedule for Texas is a road match against Stanford on March 10.

“We have to keep competing,” Center said. “We’re going to go after Stanford and whoever else comes our way.”
