A rain-soaked Houston Golf Club drew criticism from many PGA Tour pros this week at the Shell Houston Open, including former Longhorn Jordan Spieth. Spieth complained about the course’s muddy conditions after his first round before eventually missing the cut.
But he wasn’t the only Longhorn affected by the storms across Texas this weekend. A mere 100 miles northwest of Houston Golf Club, No. 16 Texas men’s golf also slogged through muddy conditions at Traditions Golf Club.
The Longhorns finished the rain-shortened Aggie Invitational in a tie for fifth place after Sunday’s final round was canceled.
Storms in the area forced tournament officials to curtail the event after 36 holes of play Saturday. Texas was 5-over par at the end of day one with team totals of 290 and 291.
Junior Scottie Scheffler recorded his third top-10 finish of the season, finishing in a tie for eighth, after he shot back-to-back rounds of 71 to post 2-under par. Scheffler bounced back after struggling two weeks ago at the Valspar Collegiate.
Junior Doug Ghim and freshman Spencer Soosman posted solid performances as they both finished in a tie for 16th at 1-over par. Sophomore Steven Chervony was four strokes behind the duo at 5-over par, good for a tie for 31st.
Freshman Nick Costello struggled to navigate Traditions Golf Club on his way to rounds of 82 and 77.
And Taylor Funk, competing as an individual, continued to flounder during his junior campaign. Funk — an instrumental member of the Texas team that lost in the national championship last summer — has not been the same player he was last season. He has yet to break par in a tournament round this season, and has yet to record a top-15 finish. Funk surely hoped for more out of himself this season after playing in the deciding match of last season’s national championship.
The No. 7 LSU Tigers won the event at 11-under-par after posting rounds of 282 and 283 on Saturday. No. 2 Baylor finished a stroke behind at 10-under. The hosting No. 17 Aggies took third place.
The Longhorns have one final tournament during the spring season before post-season play begins. They travel to California next weekend for the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club.
