The song “Chelsea Dagger” by The Fratellis boomed from the stadium speakers to taunt the Sooners after Texas scored two runs in the sixth inning.
Those two runs were delivered as the final dagger in the 9-3 Longhorn win after senior first baseman Kacy Clemens had already gashed Oklahoma with a grand slam in the fifth inning.
Clemens’ grand slam followed his younger brother, sophomore designated hitter Kody Clemens’ solo shot that tied up the game at 2-2 in the third inning.
The dynamic duo of Kacy and Kody electrified UFCU Disch-Falk Field for a dramatic Red River Showdown victory that will be remembered for years to come.
“(This is) something we’re going to talk to our kids about when we’re 50,” Kacy Clemens said. “It’s definitely a special moment, something that not a lot of kids get to do and we’re just cherishing it to the fullest.”
No. 16 Oklahoma scored two runs against Texas before most Longhorn fans could even settle into their seats in the first inning.
The Sooners immediately loaded the bases against redshirt junior pitcher Morgan Cooper, who needed 26 pitches to get out of the inning.
The Clemens brothers had Cooper’s back, though. Kody Clemens came out with a clutch homer to erase the early deficit.
But his older brother, Kacy, stole the show by sending the ball over the right field fence for his first-career grand slam to make it a wide-open 7-2 game.
And by this time, a full crowd of 6,603 burnt orange fans were there to witness it.
“It’s funny, we always get on each other in the dugout,” Kody Clemens said. “I’m like, ‘Dude, you keep hitting these home runs and I’m trying to catch up to you. Every time I hit one, it seems like you hit one right after me.’ But yeah, we kind of just chase each other and it’s a good time… it’s something not many people can say that they’ve done in their life.”
After getting past his first-inning nerves, Cooper dominated on the mound with five scoreless innings in order to pick up his fourth win of the season.
The right-hander punched out seven Sooner batters after entering the game with 56 strikeouts — the second most in the Big 12.
“Morgan Cooper was as good as he could throw it today,” head coach David Pierce said. “And he did at a time when we really needed it.”
In addition to the Clemens brothers’ home runs, Longhorn batters totaled five doubles in the game and finished the day with 10 hits.
The Longhorns now improve to 22–12 on the season and 6–5 in the Big 12 to move above .500 in the conference for the first time this year. They look to feed off the electric energy from their fans at home in order to complete the series sweep against the Sooners on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
“The crowd and the atmosphere in the last two days is just what you really imagine when you’re talking about Texas baseball,” Pierce said. “It’s been a lot of fun, and then to really perform and play well for the crowd, hopefully has their interest in coming back tomorrow.”
