Kendrex White, the suspect in the May 1 UT stabbing attack, will appear in court June 9. Both sides will make arguments regarding White’s competency to stand trial, Travis County Judge Tamara Needles ruled today.

Last week, Needles sided with a motion from the prosecution to conduct a second mental health examination by an impartial doctor. It is not clear whether that examination has been conducted yet. The first examination, conducted by a doctor selected by White’s attorneys, determined White to be competent.

At the hearing today, Needles also ordered White’s defense to respond to several motions filed by the prosecution by June 2. These motions are related to punishment and deal with White’s sanity, which is legally different than competency.

White’s parents said he had never been the same after a car crash on campus April 4 in which White was charged with driving while intoxicated. White began acting erratically and had his first seizure in the weeks after the crash, prompting his involuntarily commitment to a psychiatric facility in his hometown of Killeen, according to the Austin American-Statesman.

On May 1, police say White went on a stabbing spree that injured three and left undergraduate studies freshman Harrison Brown dead.

White said he did not remember the attack, but said it was “possible that he used a knife to hit someone,” according to KXAN.

White did not appear in court today and was instead represented by his attorneys, Krista Chacona, Jana Ortega and Gabriella Young.
