The Big 12 Conference announced freshman Lexi Sun earned Big 12 Freshman of the Week following a dominant performance at the University of San Diego tournament over the weekend.
Sun led the Longhorns with 31 kills and added 19 digs, eight blocks, four assists and two service aces which also earned her Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Sun’s stand-out performance comes in Texas’ three-game sweep at the University of San Diego where the Longhorns beat out Villanova, Georgia Tech and then-No. 17 San Diego.
Texas’ three-win weekend also comes one week after the then-No. 1 Longhorns’ season-opening loss to No. 12 Florida, where Sun also led the team with 13 points following her 11 kill, two block performance.
Sun, who is just a freshman, has led the team in blocks in four of her first five games on the 40 Acres. The Longhorns, who were the preseason No. 1, currently sit at No. 5 as they prepare for a top-five showdown with No. 1 Minnesota on Friday, Sept. 8.
Jerritt Elliott and the Longhorns will take on the top-ranked team in Gregory Gym for their home-opener. The Longhorns traveled to both the East and West coasts for the past two weekends. Now, Lexi Sun and the Longhorns will get play in front of their own crowd as they try to take down the No. 1 team in the nation.
