While Texas fell in overtime on Saturday afternoon to No. 11 Oklahoma State, the rest of the Big 12 suited up in four other conference matchups. Here’s how those contests shaped up. 

Oklahoma wins in final seconds

Oklahoma rolled into Manhattan, Kansas, with only one blemish on its record on Saturday afternoon, making the Sooners one of the top contenders for the Big 12 title. 

But it was all Kansas State in the first half as the Wildcats pulled out to a commanding 21-7 lead in the second quarter. Kansas State’s hard-nosed rushing offense, led by sophomore quarterback Alex Delton, proved to be overpowering for the Sooners for much of the contest — but after halftime, Oklahoma’s electrifying offense picked up. 

The game would come down to a 35-35 tie with only seconds left in the fourth quarter. What seemed like a set up play for a game-winning field goal turned into a 22-yard rushing touchdown by redshirt sophomore running back Rodney Anderson, giving Oklahoma a seven-point lead in the final seconds. Despite the 42-35 win, the Sooners would get bumped down a spot to No. 10 in the AP Poll.

Baylor nearly earns first win

West Virginia has been a solid Big 12 contender all season lead by star transfer junior quarterback Will Grier. The Mountaineers are a formidable opponent in the conference, capable of knocking off any team on any given week. Baylor, on the other hand, had not won a single game entering the matchup, leaving West Virginia as the clear favorite. 

But despite the record disparity, Baylor fought tough with the Mountaineers, taking the game’s outcome down to the final play.

Freshman quarterback Charlie Brewer rallied the Baylor offense with 23 unanswered points in the second half, bringing Baylor within two points of the Mountaineers with 17 seconds to go. But a failure on a two-point try left the Bears’ comeback bid just short. 

The 38-36 final notched Baylor’s seventh-consecutive loss, bringing West Virginia’s record to 5–2, 3–1 Big 12. The Mountaineers now rank No. 22 in the AP Poll and hold the nation’s passing touchdown leader. Grier’s 26 touchdowns lead the NCAA by quite the margin, ahead of Missouri’s Drew Lock by three touchdowns.

Texas Tech drops second straight game

After a hard fought loss last week to West Virginia, Texas Tech looked to get its conference season back on track as it hosted Iowa State on Saturday. With the Cyclones entering on a two-game win streak, including a road victory over Oklahoma, Texas Tech was in for a rough battle. 

The Cyclones held the Red Raiders’ prolific offense to only two touchdowns the entire game. Texas Tech also did not have a single player surpass the 100-yard mark in receiving or rushing yards in the game, uncharacteristic for a Kingsbury-coached squad. 

Sophomore running back David Montgomery proved to be the star of the game for the Cyclones, rushing for 164 yards on 28 attempts en route to a 31-13 Iowa State victory. Now, with just one conference loss and five games remaining, Iowa State is tied for second in the Big 12 standings and ranked in the AP Poll for the first time since 2005.
