The Longhorns will be without one of their budding stars ahead of the 2018 season.
Texas Athletics announced Friday afternoon that freshman outside hitter Lexi Sun announced she is transferring from the program, intending to leave the University at the conclusion of the spring academic term.
“I want to thank all of the people that have impacted me throughout my time here at The University of Texas,” Sun said in a statement. “I know the Longhorn volleyball program will continue to be successful and I wish them nothing but the best.”
Sun averaged 3.27 kills per set along with a .277 hitting percentage during Texas’ run to the Elite Eight last season, turning into one of the go-to players for head coach Jerritt Elliott. Sun’s departure will leave a big hole in Texas’ 2017 recruiting class, which was headlined by Sun and setter Ashley Shook.
“This is about Lexi and her family,” Elliott said in a statement. “We have a lot of respect for her and wish her the best of luck.”
