Senior defensive back Kris Boyd and senior defensive lineman Breckyn Hager were both selected to the Preseason All-Big 12 team, the conference announced Wednesday.
The same afternoon, the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl announced in a press release that head coach Tom Herman was among 20 NCAA head football coaches selected to the preseason watch list for the 2018 Dodd trophy.
The Preseason All-Big 12 team is selected each year by the league’s media representatives based on which players from around the conference are projected to make the biggest impact during the season.
Last season, Boyd worked as one of the team’s best coverage players, compiling 57 tackles, two interceptions and 15 pass breakups, which earned him second-team All-Big 12 honors.
Hager is expected to be among the team’s best front-seven players this season, after finishing last year with 23 tackles, nine tackles for loss, four sacks, a fumble recovery and an All-Big 12 honorable mention.
Herman’s selection, meanwhile, was based on the committee’s consideration of each program’s graduation rate, projected success for the 2018 season, academic progress rate (APR), commitment to service and charity in the community.
Herman was one of four Big 12 coaches in total that were recognized on the watch list. Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy, Oklahoma’s Lincoln Riley and TCU’s Gary Patterson were among the other coaches announced.
The Big 12 media preseason poll will be released Thursday before Big 12 media days take place in Frisco, Texas.
