The Longhorns are set to play the North Carolina Tar Heels in the semifinal round of the 18th annual Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational on Thanksgiving Day, a Texas Athletics press release announced Thursday.
Texas will make its first appearance in the tournament and first trip to Las Vegas since the 2001–02 season, when the Longhorns defeated UNLV, 87-78.
The tournament will consist of only four teams: UCLA, Michigan State, North Carolina and Texas. The Longhorns are the only team in the tournament with an all-time winning record against the Tar Heels, winning seven of the last eight meetings between the schools to improve to 7–3 all-time.
This matchup marks the 11th meeting between the two schools, with Texas winning most recently in 2015. Under then-first-year head coach Shaka Smart, the Longhorns pulled off a stunning buzzer-beating upset of Roy Williams’ third-ranked Tar Heels in Austin.
Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. central (4:30 p.m. local) at Orleans Arena and will be televised nationally on Fox Sports 1.
The loser will face off against the loser of UCLA and Michigan State in the consolation round on Black Friday at 1 p.m. local time. Texas is 3–3 all-time against UCLA and 4–5 against Michigan State.
