Every NFL season is full of shocking revelations and unexpected outcomes, but they all have one thing in common — heartbreaking injuries. They’re often unpredictable yet inevitable for some.

Here’s the latest injury statuses on a few former Longhorns:

Earl Thomas

The last six months have been the most tumultuous of Earl Thomas’ career. Throughout the summer, Thomas fought with the Seahawks’ front office to give him a long term deal. The Seahawks denied his wishes, leading to Thomas holding out to start the season.

Players often hold out for new deals because of the possibility of injury that looms every time they step onto the gridiron. Unfortunately, this worst case scenario unfolded for Thomas when he broke his leg in Sunday’s game against the Cardinals.

Thomas’ season is now finished, along with his time with the Seahawks — in all likelihood. The next chapter of Thomas’ career is uncertain for the moment and his next step will be put on hold until the offseason.

Quandre Diggs

During the Lions’ loss to the Dallas Cowboys last Sunday, Detroit safety Quandre Diggs suffered what is believed to be a fractured hand. This was Diggs’ first season as the team’s starting strong safety after playing cornerback in the years prior. Diggs also received a three-year contract extension prior to the start of this season. It does not appear that Diggs will miss the whole season, but there is currently no timetable for his return.

There is a chance Diggs returns this weekend, but the possibility is highly unlikely. The Lions want him back as soon as possible as he has proven to be an essential piece to the back end of Detroit’s defense.

Kenny Vaccaro

Kenny Vaccaro, a safety for the Tennessee Titans, suffered an elbow injury in Week Four that will keep him sidelined for two to four weeks. Vaccaro, who played for the New Orleans Saints prior to this year, is in his first year with the Titans and has played well up to this point. He has accounted for 17 total tackles and an interception through four weeks.

Vaccaro was signed to fill the role of safety Johnathan Cyprien after he went down with a torn ACL during training camp. With Vaccaro now expected to miss several weeks, the team is very thin at the safety position, jeopardizing the success of the team’s defense. The Titans are left with rookie Dane Cruikshank to fill Vaccaro’s spot until he is able to return.
