Texas ended its offensive coordinator search Sunday after announcing the hiring of Mike Yurcich, Ohio State’s passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

The announcement comes a day after Yurcich and Ohio State lost to Clemson in the College Football Playoff semifinal, 29-23.

Similar to newly hired defensive coordinator Chris Ash, Yurcich will officially join the team following the Valero Alamo Bowl on New Year’s Eve.

“I’ve admired his work for many years,” Herman said in a statement. “He’s very highly regarded and respected in the coaching world, and in talking at length with him, I was extremely impressed with what he’ll bring to our staff. What impresses me most about him is how he works with and develops players and the creative ways he utilizes all of his weapons on offense.”

Those two aspects, development and creativity, will be essential to Yurcich’s success when he arrives at Texas. He will inherit a top recruiting class and a rising senior quarterback in Sam Ehlinger. Toward the end of the 2019 season, Texas struggled to put points on the board and dropped three of the last five games.

“When looking at offensive coordinator positions, Texas is a no-brainer career move,” Yurcich said in a statement. “I’m excited to work with coach Herman and the entire staff. Having recruited the state of Texas, and having coordinated in the Big 12, I’m excited and proud to represent UT Football as its next offensive coordinator.” 

Yurcich coached in the Big 12 from 2013–2018 as the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State. In his most recent stop, Yurcich coached Heisman candidate Justin Fields and the Ohio State Buckeyes to one of the top offenses in the nation, averaging nearly 47 points per game. 

At Texas, Yurcich will hold the same position — offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach — and will look to lead the Longhorns to the same success.
