For the first time in more than a century, The Daily Texan will not be making a daily print paper every weekday in the fall.
Instead, due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the paper’s production process, the Texan will be producing a tabloid issue twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays during the fall semester. We will print physical copies of our back-to-school issues Aug. 24 and 26. Then, starting Sept. 1, we will produce a physical print issue every Tuesday and an online-only issue Friday. We do not anticipate that the decision to move from a daily to a weekly print product will be permanent.
Since the pandemic began, members of the Texan’s staff have shown incredible resilience while working and taking classes remotely. Dozens of our staffers across multiple departments have produced in-depth features, covered breaking news and pushed the limits of our web and multimedia coverage. We will continue to produce the paper and our award-winning journalism remotely in the fall for the health and safety of our staffers.
While we at the Texan won’t be working from our office or producing a daily paper, we certainly do not plan to stop holding the University accountable or report on what is happening within the UT-Austin community on a daily basis. There has perhaps never been a more important time to report on these historic moments, and our staff plans to continue to provide accurate and credible information about the coronavirus pandemic as we have done since March.
This semester, the focus of our journalism will be shifting from print to digital in order to reach the thousands of members of the UT community who won’t be on campus. Our daily coverage of the University and how the coronavirus is impacting students, faculty and staff can be found on our Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. We will also continue to share regular updates in our three newsletters: The Daily Digest, The Weekly Rewind, and Tailgating with Texas.
Since 1917, The Daily Texan has been the daily student publication at the University of Texas. While we may not be making a daily paper this fall, our staff remains just as dedicated to our mission to inform the UT community.
