Texas House Member Democrat Gina Hinojosa was winning Texas’s District 49 with 53% as of 11:10 p.m. Tuesday evening, according to Decision Desk.
Hinojosa has represented District 49 for the last four years and ran against Republican Charles Allan Meyer as well as Libertarian Kenneth Moore.
A total of 167,309 people reside within District 49, which spans from Research Boulevard to William Canyon Drive.
Hinojosa advanced from the Democratic primary on March 3.
Some of Hinojosa’s main platform points include changing education funding methods, ending campus carry and maintaining access to women’s healthcare facilities, according to her campaign website.
“Public universities need the same right as private universities to opt out of campus carry, and we need more funding for mental health,” Hinojosa said on her campaign website.
Prior to being elected as a Texas House member, Hinojosa worked part time as a Texas Rural Legal Aid for the Office of Immigrant Concerns and was also elected as the Austin Independent School District Board President in 2015, according to Hinojosa’s campaign website.
Under her leadership, every AISD high school met state accountability standards for the first time, according to Hinojosa’s campaign website.
