UNM Classic: Jonathan Jones shines in Albuquerque

Texas put on a solid showing in New Mexico this weekend, winning 10 total events at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic. Their success was led by senior Jonathan Jones, who blew the field away with his performance in the 600-meter run.

On Friday, Texas won eight events and 13 different Longhorns placed in the top three. Freshmen Ackelia Smith and Darja Sopova placed first and second respectively in the women’s long jump invitational, with Sopova beating the field by nearly two feet in the competition. Sophomore Stacy Brown Jr. triumphed in the men’s long jump invitational, winning by a margin of two feet.

Senior Jonathan Jones put on a clinic in his Friday run, placing first in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:15.12. This bests his previous best time of 1:15.61, set in January at the Clemson Invitational. Jones beat the field by a margin of over five seconds, with second place coming in at a time of 1:20.68. As an Olympian, Jones did not surprise with his performance. His continued improvement in the 600-meter run bodes well for the rest of the season and future international events.

Sophomore Davicia Patterson also took first in the women’s 600-meter run, clocking in with a time of 1:29.51. Patterson beat out TCU sophomore Jasmin Muhammad-Graham by nearly two seconds, potentially giving insight to future battles in Big 12 competition.

Events continued Saturday morning, with a majority of the short distance races occurring on day two of the New Mexico Classic. Texas only won two events on day two, with graduate student Jon Maas winning section two of the 400-meter dash, and the Longhorn team of senior Julien Alfred, senior Kynnedy Flannel, sophomore Davicia Patterson and senior Stacy Ann Williams taking home the 4×400-meter relay.
