Falling in love: the best romantic movies for this October

Grace Hare, Life & Arts general reporter

The month of October calls for sunset visits to pumpkin patches, the flavor of apple cider and snuggling in sweaters with loved ones. As summer drifts away into a crisp breeze and Halloween decorations find their way out from the attic, Austinites find themselves in need of a signature feel-good fall movie.

The Daily Texan compiled a list of the best romantic movies to accompany the falling leaves and charm of the cozy autumn season.

You’ve Got Mail

“Don’t you love New York in the fall?” said Joe Fox, the book superstore magnate and love interest in an anonymous email, to Kathleen Kelly, a small independent bookstore owner that Joe is emailing anonymously.

This iconic quote stayed with viewers for decades, bringing forth the warm imagery of colorful leaves falling in Central Park and the smell of new books lining smooth bookshelves. While this story of an anonymous love affair between two strangers brings in classic rom-com tropes, the film charms with the exciting and surprising 1998 equivalent of online dating.

Sleepy Hollow

Staying true to Tim Burton’s style of shocking and thrilling his viewers, this movie blends the supernatural and horror in an especially poignant way. While not for the faint of heart, it manages to tie in elements of fantasy and romance into the frightening, R-rated film, which makes it surprisingly well-rounded for a variety of viewers.

A love triangle ensues between male characters competing for the hand of the bewitching, young female lead Katrina Van Tassel. The character, Ichabod Crane, is a stand out in the movie, conveying passionate and thrilling romance sure to leave watchers lovesick and swept up in the exciting tale.

Hocus Pocus

This movie makes for an amusing, family-friendly watch during the fall season. The combination of local legend, history and teenage angst molds this story into an interesting and low-stakes film for all.

The chemistry between Max and Allison gradually blossoms into a teenage love story throughout the film. Additionally, the plot portrays non-romantic forms of love and interest, such as the heartwarming relationship between Max and his younger sister Dani. With fast-paced action and witty and sweet dialogue, this movie makes viewers remember the magic of a childhood Halloween, leaving the audience with a twinge of sweet nostalgia and a curiosity for revisiting All Hallow’s Eve myths and tales.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2

This high tension and messy portrayal of the last Harry Potter novel brings together the beloved characters many audiences rooted for since childhood. While all of the Harry Potter movies have characters with romantic developments and interests, this movie wins the hearts of viewers for being the most romantic because of the kiss between Ron and Hermoine. This scene relieves all the tension formed between the pair since “The Sorcerer’s Stone” with the romance finally playing out.

Additionally, this series makes for a perfect watch during October with its broomsticks, potions and dark magic. Viewers can brace themselves for shocking twists and turns as well as heart-wrenching goodbyes —all worth it for a deeply satisfying finale.
