October 30, 2022
With both Halloween festivities and midterms rattling in students’ minds during October, a laid-back movie night can bring some much-needed relaxation. The Daily Texan curated a list of which Halloween movie students should watch based on their college.
College of Education – “Child’s Play”
When young students seem to be controlled by Chucky’s devilish spirit, “Child’s Play” offers a relatable horror flick to end an exhausting day of student teaching.
College of Pharmacy – “Pet Sematary”
This horror flick motivates aspiring pharmaceutical workers to intervene before their four-legged clients meet an untimely demise.
Moody College of Communication –“Interview with the Vampire”
An insider investigation into the life of a vampire makes an explosive front-page headline, complete with ads informing readers on how to emulate this creature’s Victorian style.
Dell Medical School – “Frankenstein”
This creature feature allows Dell Medical students to put down their textbooks and learn about the scientific discoveries of Victor Frankenstein. While students might be unable to use any of Frankenstein’s surgical tips, at least patients will leave their care without a green tint.
College of Fine Arts – “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”
“Rocky Horror” gives student performers the chance to garner inspiration from a beloved cult classic, allowing them to don Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s pearls and belt out its soundtrack at the top of their lungs.
McCombs School of Business – “Coraline”
A mother offering Coraline affection in exchange for sewing buttons into her eyes stands out as the shadiest business deal known to man.
School of Nursing – “Casper”
Just as nurses bring comfort to medical patients, Casper’s friendly face eases people’s fears about the paranormal.
School of Architecture – “The Addams Family”
Architecture students looking to design a ghoulishly great building like the Addams Family mansion can draw inspiration from this gothic comedy. As the theme song says, their house is a museum.
Cockrell School of Engineering – “Ghostbusters”
Few characters use their gadgets and gizmos with as much style and ease as this intelligent quartet.
Jackson School of Geosciences – “The Nightmare Before Christmas”
Jack Skellington and his gang may not come from prehistoric times, but once Jack’s famous skull ages into a fossil, geoscience students will be the first to get their hands on it.
School of Information – “Paranormal Activity”
As much as they dedicate themselves to technology and statistics, informatics students might relate to the cast of “Paranormal Activity” as they capture supernatural secrets.
College of Liberal Arts – “The Shining”
Students interested in social sciences could gain valuable insight into the psyche by watching Jack Torrance crumble into insanity in this psychological horror.
College of Natural Sciences – “The Little Shop of Horrors”
Aspiring scientists who dream of becoming a mad scientist can study the star of this show — a bloodthirsty combination of a Venus flytrap and a butterwort.
Steve Hicks School of Social Work – “Mean Girls”
This teenage movie’s witty banter and optimistic message will remind social work students how to diffuse a conflict and potentially convince students to slap on mouse ears for their next Halloween party.
LBJ School of Public Affairs – “Night of the Living Dead”
Whether drafting a new food policy or a plan to keep crime off the streets, LBJ students would be prepared to contain this film’s zombie outbreak with ease.
School of Law – “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”
Since Leatherface did not talk in the franchise, his testimonies might solely consist of grunts and groans — a plus for any lawyers making up the prosecution team on his trial.
School of Undergraduate Studies – “Scream”
Undergraduate students gravitate toward a myriad of drastically different fields of study in the same way “Scream” melds horror and comedy together into an endlessly entertaining franchise.
