Looking ahead to Texas football’s 2023 Big 12 conference schedule

Bo Espey, General Sports Reporter

Texas football concluded spring practice this past Saturday with its annual Orange-White spring game. The game offered Longhorn fans a glimpse of the new roster as third-year head coach Steve Sarkisian looks to take his team to another level in 2023.

“This looks like my team,” Sarkisian said last week on The Pivot Podcast. “It’s Year 3, it feels and looks like my team.”

For now, fans will have to wait until September to see the Longhorns back on the field, but it’s never too early to take a look at their upcoming conference schedule, which pits them against two new conference opponents in the revamped Big 12.

@ BAYLOR

9/23

2022 record: 6-7 (4-5 Big 12)

Baylor fell short of expectations last year after winning the Big 12 in 2021, but the Bears attacked the transfer portal hard this offseason. Head coach Dave Aranda gained key pieces after losing a lot over the offseason. Both sides of the ball will feature premiere talent in Waco.

KANSAS

9/30

2022 record: 6-7 (3-6 Big 12)

Third-year head coach Lance Leipold lifted Kansas out of college football obscurity last season, leading the Jayhawks to their first bowl appearance since 2009. Last year’s All-Big 12 Second-Team quarterback Jalon Daniels returns along with plenty of offensive production from last season.

OKLAHOMA (Dallas)

10/7

2022 record: 6-7 (3-6 Big 12)

Last year, the Sooners posted their first losing season since 1998. Nonetheless, Oklahoma had a successful offseason by bringing in the fourth highest recruiting class, highlighted by five-star quarterback Jackson Arnold. Texas shouldn’t expect another 49-0 win again next season.

@ HOUSTON

10/21

2022 record: 8-5 (5-3 American Athletic Conference)

Coming off the bye week, Texas will play former Southwest Conference foe and new conference rival Houston. The Cougars look to continue their offensive success despite breaking in a new quarterback, but their defense could struggle against a high-octane Longhorn offense.

BYU

10/28

2022 record: 8-5

The Longhorns are set to face another new Big 12 member in the BYU Cougars. Head coach Kalani Sitake has proven his teams can compete against Power 5 competition in the past, so his team’s transition should go relatively smoothly.

KANSAS STATE

11/4

2022 record: 10-4 (7-2 Big 12)

Despite Kansas State losing its two best players from last season, running back Deuce Vaughn and defense end Felix Anudike-Uzomah, Chris Klieman has the Wildcats looking toward another conference title. Returning quarterback Will Howard will look to lead the Wildcats past Texas as the defense finds its footing.

@ TCU

11/11

2022 record: 13-2 (9-0 Big 12)

TCU shocked the world last year, earning its first-ever College Football Playoff appearance. However, the Horned Frogs rank 118th in returning production according to ESPN’s Bill Connelly, and the Longhorns will see fresh faces on their home turf.

@ IOWA STATE

11/18

2022 record: 4-8 (1-8 Big 12)

Matt Campbell’s team fell dramatically last year, finishing last in the conference after years of being a tough conference opponent. However, the Cyclones are likely to improve on their abysmal 1-6 record in one-score games from a season ago.

TEXAS TECH

11/24

2022 record: 8-5 (5-4 Big 12)

Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire is building a strong program in Lubbock. In his first year, the Red Raiders earned wins over major opponents Oklahoma and Texas in the same season.
