“Part of the journey is the end.” — Tony Stark, “Avengers: Endgame”
It is only fitting to start this off with a Marvel quote since I always manage to write about the franchise in my newsletter introductions. Speaking of newsletters, if you have not heard about our department, I am here to inform you that we exist! Click the Multimedia tab on The Daily Texan’s website and sign up for the following three newsletters:
The Weekly Rewind:
Ah, yes, where my journey at The Daily Texan began. During winter break of my freshman year, I reflected on the previous semester and noticed it lacked one crucial element: an outlet for my love of writing. Although I am a psychology major with a minor in law, I have always been passionate about writing and missed it immensely. This feeling led me to apply for the Texan’s newsletter department, a role that kept my passion alive while providing a manageable workload.
This newsletter was perfect; I could write personable introductions about Marvel and Texas volleyball/softball while informing readers (and myself) of content the Texan published that week. Favorite memory: pulling an all-nighter during the most important handball tournament of the year to ensure our subscribers received their newsletter on time!
The Daily Digest:
These past two summers, I wrote The Daily Digest, a bite-sized newsletter catching readers up on articles the Texan published a few days prior. Once again, my introductions reminded readers about my obsession with the Women’s College World Series, Marvel Studios, my stress regarding the LSAT and ways to stay hydrated in the crazy triple-digit heat. This popular newsletter has 15,000 subscribers, and I am so happy you all love it as much as I do (especially the dad jokes). Favorite memory: ensuring readers knew that Texas softball made history by becoming the first unseeded team to reach the championship series during last year’s Women’s College World Series!
Tailgating with Texas:
As you can tell by now, I am an avid Texas softball and volleyball fan. Without a doubt, you can always find me on the floor of Gregory Gym cheering in volleyball’s student section during the fall semester and perched behind Red & Charline McCombs Field’s home plate to watch softball during the spring. Watching superstar athletes like Logan Eggleston and Janae Jefferson in action was breathtaking, but being able to write about them in this newsletter last semester was a game-changing experience.
Before I came along, all three of these newsletters, especially Tailgating, mainly promoted football and men’s basketball. Upon my arrival, I changed that norm immediately and hope the standard I set for highlighting all of Texas athletics’ programs remains after my departure. Favorite memory: highlighting articles about the sports I grew up playing and love with all my heart.
Writing for this department was one thing, but becoming its editor was another. I cannot properly express my gratitude to Trinity Smith for believing in me and making me her associate editor. When I was promoted to editor the following semester, this department practically became my child: I loved seeing my writers enhance their skills while the newsletter continued improving its open and click-thru rates.
Lastly, I would like to thank my Mom, Dad, boyfriend and friends for constantly supporting me and listening to me talk about how much I love this job over the past year and a half.
Thank you to those who currently read our newsletters and those who will sign up immediately after reading this article. Your readership means the world to me, and if I could hug all of you, I would. With that said, here is my final dad joke as your newsletter editor:
Why did the woman leave the helium factory after fighting with her boss?
She refused to be spoken to in that tone of voice!
