From starring on Camp Rock to becoming a rockstar, Demi Lovato brings nostalgia to fans with their latest studio album. REVAMPED revisits and transforms ten of Lovato’s pop hits, turning them into rock songs to fit the artist’s genre switch.
Lovato started to play rock versions of their greatest hits while on tour for HOLY FVCK, the rock album they released in 2022. After fans’ positive reactions, they decided to re-record and release the rock versions in order to play fan favorite tracks without clashing the new rock style.
Opening track “Heart Attack – Rock Version” starts off with its classic synth instruments, but soon after kicks into heavy drum beats instead of the original’s softer pop rhythm. Lovato’s genre change comes in distinctively when the chorus hits with the same high notes as before but with new electric guitar and drums. Later in the song, new riffs and note changes showcase Lovato’s matured voice.
One of four collaborations on the album, “Sorry Not Sorry (with Slash) – Rock Version” matches Lovato’s powerhouse vocals with a high-powered guitar solo from Slash. Lovato’s collaborations allow them to add twists to the same melodies that fans hit play on for years. Renewed vocals and melodies are featured in “Neon Lights (with The Maine) – Rock Version” with John O’Callaghan’s introduced harmonies.
“Cool for the Summer – Rock Version” uses subtle lyric changes to show Lovato’s growth. Lovato’s playful lyric “Don’t tell your mother” faces “Go tell your mother,” changing the song’s original secretive approach to a shameless one, with a darker voice delivery.
Slowing the album down a notch, “Skyscraper – Rock Version” features the same themes of empowerment and overcoming obstacles as the original 2011 track. The 2023 rerecorded version showcases Lovato’s mellower vocals on the album, preserving the same nostalgia and reminiscence from before.
“La La Land (feat. Nita Strauss) – Rock Version” revisits a fan favorite, allowing fans to compare Lovato’s fully grown vocals to their angsty 16-year-old vocals from 2008. It features guitar from solo artist Nita Strauss, who tours with Lovato as their guitarist.
The tenth and closing track on the album, “Don’t Forget – Rock Version,” ends the album on a completely different note than the start. The quietest song on the tracklist, the track leaves listeners with a mellow reflection of the original themes Demi intended for their songs.
