As temperatures finally leave the triple digits and walking to class becomes more bearable, fall begins settling in. To commemorate the start of colder weather, The Daily Texan highlighted TV shows guaranteed to serve up ultimate fall vibes for students looking to stay in and bundled up in front of the TV.
“Succession” created by Jesse Armstrong
Following the three Roy siblings, Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Shiv (Sarah Snook), in their fight to take over their father Logan’s (Brian Cox) media and entertainment conglomerate, WayStar Royco, “Succession” mixes business with quick insults, family conflict and many private jet rides. The recipient of 13 Emmys, this HBO show proved it can be fun to watch millionaires argue about who gets to be in charge. The nonchalant family insults and interrogations feel warmly akin to a Thanksgiving dinner and reminds any homesick student of the complicated feelings of being around family.
“Only Murders in the Building” created by John Hoffman and Steve Martin
A modern take on murder mystery, “Only Murders in the Building” follows three lonely characters joined together through their love of true crime. Together, they work to solve the murder that happened in their apartment complex, all while documenting their findings to their podcast. Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez prove to be an unstoppable comedic trio with their performances in the show, currently streaming its third season on Hulu. With murder all around, “Only Murders in the Building” offers a thrilling, yet witty fall watch.
“Gilmore Girls” created by Amy Sherman-Palladino
Set in Stars Hollow, a fictitious small town in Connecticut, “Gilmore Girls” stands as a fall classic. Rory attends Chilton Preparatory, a prestigious private school, and studies tirelessly to make it into her dream school, Harvard University. The dedication Rory shows to her studies makes students watching inspired to make some coffee, pick up their textbooks and flourish this fall semester.
“Gossip Girl” created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage
In New York City, drama runs rampant amongst the Upper East Side’s most elite teenagers. Beginning with the return of Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) from her disappearance a year prior, the show quickly fills the audience in on the friendships, betrayals and romance between the characters. A website controlled by a character under the pen name Gossip Girl creates chaos, reporting on the intimate details of the main characters’ lives. Based on the novel series written by Cecily von Ziegesar, the show’s dark, dramatic tone provides the perfect fall watch for those looking for a teen drama to enjoy.
