The start of October marks the arrival of many long-anticipated Austin traditions. As promises of fall begin to fill the air, students take on jam-packed weekends filled with rival football games, ACL and endless Halloween parties. However, October also brings the arrival of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Daily Texan compiled a list of activities in which students can embrace their Austin roots while supporting breast cancer awareness.
A bucket-list October activity, this haunted house stands as one of the best in town. A 100% volunteer-based organization that aims to raise money for the Breast Cancer Resource Center, SCARE for a CURE raised $448,000 over the past 17 years. At the haunted house, participants embark on an hour-long journey, where they face obstacles such as blood, slime, slides and more. SCARE for a CURE boasts a full-contact, extreme interactive haunted experience and makes for the perfect choice for any thrill seeker this spooky season.
Rudy’s Country Store & Bar-B-Q
An Austin classic, Rudy’s serves authentic Texas barbecue. Only a 5-minute drive from campus, Rudy’s makes for the perfect opportunity to indulge in a must-have Austin experience while also supporting a worthy cause. Throughout October, Rudy’s will hold their annual Pink “Cup for a Cause” campaign in which they transform their 32-ounce drink cup into an original pink design. Since launching “Cup for a Cause,” Rudy’s raised over $2.5 million for breast cancer, military charities and hurricane relief, and they hope to raise more this year by encouraging customers to donate one dollar at checkout. As an incentive, purchasers will receive a free large drink ticket redeemable upon their next visit.
On Oct. 29, Susan G. Komen will hold its annual More Than Pink Walk at Barton Creek Square. The More Than Pink Walk aims to bring together those impacted by breast cancer, and participants will walk for those who are unable to. Those interested can register as either a team or individual. Participants will raise money throughout October, and on the morning of Oct. 29, everyone will come together alongside breast cancer fighters and survivors to complete the walk.
