Trick or treat? The Daily Texan chooses treat. With Halloween just around the corner, The Daily Texan compiled a list of four sweet treat recipes to make based on Halloween movies. The trick? Trying not to eat them all at once.
“Coraline” — Welcome Home Cake
No Halloween list can go without some mention of “Coraline,” a Halloween classic. Inspired by the cake presented to Coraline at the Other Mother’s dinner, this “Welcome Home Cake” captures the sweetness Coraline experiences when first entering her parallel universe. White chocolate and rosewater flavors form the base of the cake, and a homemade buttercream frosting adds a second layer of sweetness. Chewy fondant flowers and red icing serve as the finishing details, creating a cake that looks eerily close to the one in the movie. With its combination of sugary cake and soft fondant, this sweet treat may taste a little too good to be true…
“It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” — “I Got A Rock” Cookies
In “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” Charlie opens his trick-or-treat bag, sees a rock and looks understandably disappointed. This recipe crafts the treat Charlie probably wished to see instead. These cookies only need three ingredients: mini or regular sized Oreos, canned chocolate frosting and chocolate candy rocks. Crunchy, chocolatey, bite-sized and ready in five minutes, these cookies make for the perfect Halloween movie night snacks — no disappointment in sight.
“Hotel Transylvania” — Blobby Meringue Cookies
While Dracula acts as the star of the show in “Hotel Transylvania,” his bright green Jell-O-like companion, Blobby, should not go unnoticed. Making these Blobby meringue cookies serves as a great way to highlight a creature of few words but one that still adds humor to the film, replicating the look of Blobby’s slimy rings with a sweet and sour meringue. Candy eyes act as the finishing touch, creating the perfect dessert to absorb this Halloween.
“Casper” — 3-ingredient Ghost Truffles
Twenty-eight years later, “Casper” remains a non-spooky Halloween movie essential, and there’s no better way to pay homage to the nicest ghost around than with sweet and simple ghost truffles. Requiring only packaged Oreos, reduced-fat cream cheese and white chocolate chips, this tasty treat assembles in six minutes and results in 20 individual truffles. Simply use a toothpick to create the varying facial expressions for a sweet Casper made of truffles, with crunchy Oreos dipped in smooth layers of white chocolate, that “booo-m” with flavor.
