In what was likely their last ever conference meeting, No. 11 Texas women’s basketball defeated Oklahoma State 76-66 in Stillwater. The victory marked the 1,200th win for the program.
“It’s a tough league,” Texas head coach Vic Schaefer said about the Big 12 and playing in the conference. “I’ve always respected the people in this league, the coaches and the players because in my mind I know what it’s about. I’ve lived in this league (for) many years in my career. … It’s a tough league, but that’s what you signed up for.”
Senior forward Taylor Jones stood out in the first half tallying 11 points and nine rebounds, one rebound away from a double-double in the opening 20 minutes. The achievement came soon after the second half started, and Jones finished the game with 18 points and 14 rebounds.
Four out of the five Longhorn starters reached double-figures by the end of the game, and Texas had no points off the bench.
Junior forward Aaliyah Moore, a player from Oklahoma who grew up around an hour away from Stillwater, tallied 17 points and eight rebounds, almost becoming the second Texas player to reach a double-double. This was Moore’s third consecutive start for the Longhorns.
Freshman forward Madison Booker had 19 points to her name and nearly had her fifth game with 20 or more points. Booker was the top scorer for the Longhorns and second overall, just behind Oklahoma State’s junior guard Anna Gret Asi with 22.
“(This) Texas is the best Texas that I’ve seen in a long time,” Oklahoma State head coach Jacie Hoyt said in the Orange Power Podcast leading up to the matchup. “They have one of the best freshmen in the country. They just have a tremendous amount of size all the time”
Texas went into halftime with a nine point lead, but faced a solid Oklahoma State offense of graduate guard Quincy Noble and Asi that narrowed the gap to 43-42 four minutes into the third quarter. A minute later, the game was tied for the first time in Stillwater. Noble scored her team’s first seven points of the quarter.
After a close third quarter, Texas managed to pull away to take a 15 point lead at 72-57 in the last three minutes of the game, its largest of the match thus far. The Longhorns held the Cowgirls to a six point scoring difference in the last quarter.
Next up for the Longhorns is a home Red River Rivalry game against Oklahoma on Wednesday.
