The University recently provided data showing research expenditures at UT passed $1 billion for the first time in the 2023 fiscal year.
The data came from the Higher Education Research and Development Survey, a census of U.S. universities that spent at least $150,000 on research and development in a single fiscal year, according to their website.
The findings show that in the 2023 fiscal year, UT-Austin spent a total of $1.06 Billion on research, a 25% increase from last year’s $845.9 million.
Last year’s HERD survey ranked the University of Texas at Austin at 35 out of the 899 universities surveyed. The full survey for the 2023 fiscal year is set to be released in November of this year where the University will find out its ranking compared to other colleges around the country.
The money was split between 4,000 projects. The survey broke down the expenditures by sources of funds, with about 61% of funds coming from the federal government, followed by 22% from local sources. The funding is broken down as follows:
Federal: 60.9% ($645,540,000)
Local: 22.3% ($236,380,000)
Industry: 7.5% ($79,500,000)
Nonprofit: 5% ($53,000,000)
State and Local: 3.5% ($37,100,000)
Other: 0.8% ($8,480,000)
