In a completely unexpected move, Ryan Murphy resigned as the head coach for Texas women’s golf Friday afternoon after a decade of coaching the team.
Coach Murphy led the team through a golden age of history, capturing an impressive five conference titles since 2017. This surprising resignation also comes on the heels of Murphy winning the Big 12 Coach of the Year award.
“The University of Texas has been great to me and my family, and I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to be a coach here,” Murphy said to Texas Athletics. “I’ve enjoyed my 16 years around many terrific young people on my teams as well as many great people that work in Texas Athletics. I am happy with what we achieved in my 10 years as the Head Women’s Golf Coach, and I believe the program is in a great place. I look forward to rooting on the players I’ve had the pleasure to coach into the future.”
Current associate head coach Kate Golden is the obvious replacement candidate for Murphy, but this head-scratching move raises a lot of questions and clouds the future of the program.
