In light of UT Athletics’ transition from the Big 12 into the Southeastern Conference, UT and Texas Athletics will host a day-long SEC Celebration across campus on Sunday. As the day promises numerous activities, The Daily Texan compiled a list of free offers for attendees to take advantage of.
Free Parking
Starting at 11 a.m., designated parking garages surrounding the campus will provide free parking. For those planning to stay until the final events of the evening, Brazos Garage provides the closest parking to the tower. However, the Health Center, Guadalupe, Trinity, East Campus, Manor, San Jacinto, and San Antonio Garages, as well as Speedway and 27th Street will also provide complimentary parking.
Free Museum Activities
From 1 to 5 p.m., campus museums such as the LBJ Presidential Library, Texas Science & Natural History Museum and Blanton Museum of Art will host activities away from the Main Mall. This provides a chance for families and fans who don’t normally have free entry to the centers to enjoy what they each have to offer.
Game-Day Traditions
Starting at 2 p.m., 21st Street will offer traditional football game-day activities such as food trucks, Big Bertha, the ferris wheel, the Longhorn Band, and more. Additionally, in place of the typical merch for sale before games, UT SEC merch will be sold for the first time.
Main Mall Activities
From 5 to 9 p.m. on the Main Mall, the SEC Network will offer photo ops with studio coverage and commentary from hosts Laura Rutledge and Peter Burns, alongside other guest commentators. Additionally, at 5:30 p.m. the Main Mall will host live music from unannounced artists leading up to the closing ceremony and performance.
SEC Ceremony and Fireworks Show
At 8:30 p.m. the Tower steps will host a ceremony with SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey welcoming the Longhorn community into the conference. Sankey will be joined by Athletics Director Chris Del Conte, Chairman of The University of Texas System Board of Regents Kevin Eltife and UT President Jay Hartzell. A fireworks show will follow the ceremony.
Pitbull Performance
Some may not be interested in going to the SEC Ceremony, but if attendees want a chance at getting close to the stage for headliner Pitbull’s performance at the Tower, it may be worth attending the ceremony beforehand. Pitbull’s performance will follow the ceremony and firework show to close out the night.
