South by Southwest organizers announced Wednesday the festival ended its partnership with the U.S. Army and weapons manufacturers in the wake of pro-Palestine protests and subsequent artist drops.
“After careful consideration, we are revising our sponsorship model,” SXSW said in a statement. “As a result, the U.S. Army, and companies who engage in weapons manufacturing, will not be sponsors of SXSW 2025.”
Artists pulled themselves out of this year’s festival due to SXSW’s ties with defense and weapons contractors who supply weapons to Israel in the Israel-Hamas war. More than 80 artists pulled out of the festival, according to the Austin American-Statesman.
The Austin for Palestine Coalition said the announcement is a “major campaign victory” and commends SXSW for withdrawing from the partnerships.
“We commend SXSW for listening to the demands of the artists,” the Austin for Palestine Coalition said in a social media statement. “We urge SXSW to give further clarification regarding refusing to invite war profiteers as exhibitors or speakers.”
